Power Control Center (PCC)

High-capacity power distribution for industrial facilities. Controls and distributes incoming power to MCC, APFC, and downstream loads.

Power Control Center (PCC)

Power Control Center (PCC) assemblies are central low-voltage switchgear designed to manage high-capacity incoming power and to distribute it to motor control centers (MCC), APFC banks, UPS, generator paralleling systems and sub-distribution boards. PCCs intended for industrial and heavy-commercial installations are typically manufactured and type-tested to IEC 61439-2 (power switchgear and controlgear assemblies) with the general requirements of IEC 61439-1 applied; related component standards include IEC 60947 (switchgear and controlgear) and site-specific hazardous-area requirements per IEC 60079 where required. Typical ratings for factory-built PCCs range from 2000 A to 6300 A per busbar section, with short-time withstand (Icw) and prospective short-circuit ratings commonly specified from 50 kA up to 100 kA/1s depending on busbar construction, bolted joints and the ACB family. Busbars are normally high-conductivity copper (tinned or silver-plated where corrosion is a concern) sized for thermal and electrodynamic stress; mechanical supports, phase spacing and impedance are verified by short-circuit calculations and type testing per IEC 61439-1 clause requirements (temperature-rise, dielectric, and short-circuit tests). Constructional best practices include modular compartmentation (Form 2, Form 3b or Form 4b segregation) to allow safe live maintenance and finger-safe access (IP and touch-protection per IEC 60529 and IEC 61439). Form 3b and 4b are widely adopted for PCCs serving critical plants because they permit withdrawal or isolation of feeders while maintaining the integrity of the incomer and other feeders. Arc-fault withstand and mitigation require both mechanical design and protective systems; internal arc testing per IEC 61641 is used where arc-resistance is specified. Component selection is critical: electronic-trip air circuit breakers (ACBs) and molded-case breakers from Siemens, ABB, Schneider, Eaton or LS Electric; protection relays/energy meters from Schneider PowerLogic, ABB Relion, or Eaton Power Xpert; low-voltage busbar systems from Rittal or custom-profile bus ducts; and contactors/soft-starters for motor feeders. Popular OEM PCC product families include Siemens SIVACON and MNS lines, Schneider Prisma/Prisma Set concepts, ABB main-incomer solutions, and bespoke PCC modules built on Rittal enclosures. Design considerations include coordination studies (short-circuit, selective tripping, arc-flash energy analysis), derating for altitude and ambient temperature, ventilation or forced cooling where heat loads are high, integration of communication (Modbus, IEC 61850 gateways where required), and earthing/ground-fault detection for ungrounded or solidly grounded systems. Real-world applications span industrial manufacturing, data centers, mining and metals, oil & gas platforms and power plants—any site where high-capacity, reliable LV distribution and safe operational segregation are mandatory. For procurement, request IEC 61439 type test dossiers, single-line diagrams, short-circuit calculations, and manufacturer-specific PCC families (e.g., SIVACON, MNS, Prisma Set) for direct performance comparisons.
