Power Control Center (PCC) for Oil & Gas
IEC 61439 power control center (pcc) assemblies engineered for oil & gas applications. Rugged IEC 61439 panel assemblies for upstream, midstream, and downstream oil and gas installations with hazardous area and extreme environment considerations.
Power Control Center (PCC) assemblies for oil & gas installations combine high-capacity low-voltage switchgear practice with hazardous-area engineering, corrosion mitigation and integrated power management. Typical PCCs are designed and verified to IEC 61439-1 and IEC 61439-2 requirements (type-test verification: temperature rise, dielectric, short-circuit, mechanical, IP and clearances) while complying with the IEC 60079 series for explosion protection and ATEX/IECEx certification where required. Common commercial platforms used as references include Siemens SIVACON, ABB MNS and Schneider Electric Prisma Set; bespoke PCCs from manufacturers such as Patrion follow the same verification pathways but are tailored for offshore (FPSO, platforms), midstream compressor stations and onshore refinery and tank-farm installations. Electrically, oil & gas PCCs use high-capacity busbar systems sized up to 6300 A with short-circuit withstand ratings typically in the 65–120 kA / 1 s range depending on the site fault-level study. Bus arrangements include single bus, bus-tie-bus and double bus (redundant) configurations to support N+1 or 2N availability. Forms of separation specified for safety and maintainability are typically Form 3b to Form 4b per IEC 61439-1 (separation between functional units, busbar and cable compartments, or full segregation for critical services). Rated voltage is typically up to 690 V AC with ingress protection levels from IP31 for sheltered indoor locations to IP54 for outdoor or adverse environments. Mechanical and environmental design addresses corrosive atmospheres, salt spray (ISO 9227), NORSOK/ISO 12944 coating classes (C5-H/C5-M) and material selection (stainless steel 316L or duplex where required). Climate and vibration classifications follow IEC 60721. For hazardous areas, Ex protection methods (Ex d, Ex e, Ex p, Ex ia) are selected per IEC 60079-x series and applied to field devices, motor starters and instrument interfaces. Protection and control notes: LV switchgear uses IEC 60947 series devices (circuit-breakers IEC 60947-2, contactors IEC 60947-4). Selective coordination is achieved with time-current curves, inverse-time relays, electronic trip units and breaker grading studies validated by primary injection tests during FAT. Integrated power monitoring for demand management and power-quality analysis uses devices such as Schneider PowerLogic, Siemens SENTRON or ABB PM ranges, often combined with harmonic mitigation (passive or active filters) to manage VFD-driven compressors and pumps. Testing and lifecycle: Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) with secondary/primary injection, mechanical checks and functional PLC/SCADA integration is standard; site commissioning includes insulation/continuity tests and protective relay calibration. Arc-flash risk is mitigated through engineering studies (IEEE 1584/NFPA 70E guidance), remote racking, arc containment or pressure-relief provisions. For remote oil & gas sites, designs include local automation, remote telemetry (Modbus/IEC 61850 as applicable), heater/thermostat systems and provisions for minimal on-site maintenance.
