IEC 61439 Panel Type
Main Distribution Board (MDB)
Primary power distribution from transformer to sub-circuits. Rated up to 6300A. Houses main incoming breaker, bus-section, and outgoing feeders.

The Main Distribution Board (MDB) is the primary LV switchgear assembly that receives transformer or incoming utility feeds and distributes power to sub-distribution panels, MCCs, and critical loads. MDBs compliant with IEC 61439-2 are engineered for rated currents typically from 630 A up to 6 300 A, busbar short‑circuit withstands (Icw) commonly specified to 65–100 kA for 1 s (or higher where site fault levels demand), and system voltages up to 1 000 V AC for industrial applications. Typical commercial implementations use modular systems such as Siemens SIVACON, ABB MNS or Schneider Prisma Set as reference architectures for busbar segregation and cubicle layout. Core design tasks include busbar sizing (copper or aluminium, tinned copper joints), cross‑sectional area for thermal and mechanical stress, fault‑current induced forces, and jointing/torque control to avoid hot spots. IEC 61439-1 prescribes verification by calculation or type/assembly testing (temperature-rise, short‑circuit, dielectric, IP/IK and mechanical). IEC 61439-2 adds criteria specific to power switchgear. Switching and protective devices must comply with IEC 60947 series (ACBs, MCCBs, contactors), and hazardous-area MDBs require IEC 60079 compliance and special enclosure and segregation practices. Forms of internal separation (Form 2a/2b, 3a/3b, 4a/4b) determine how busbars, functional units, and cable compartments are segregated for safety and live‑parts access—MDBs often employ Form 2b to 4b for maintenance without shutdown. Component selection focuses on reliable incomers (Siemens 3WL/3VA, Schneider Masterpact, Eaton Xpert), feeder protection (ABB Tmax/Formula, Noark, Hager), metering (class 0.5 instrument transformers or direct metering panels), surge protection (Type 1+2 SPD), and monitoring/SCADA integration for data centers and critical facilities. Thermal management, derating for ambient temperature, and harmonics (power factor correction/filters) are vital in industrial and renewable-energy sites. Mechanical integrity—Rittal or similar enclosures, conductor supports, and IP/IK ratings for outdoor/marine use—must be specified. Real-world applications include utility substations and infrastructure distribution, data-center redundant feeds with selective coordination, oil & gas and marine MDBs with hazardous‑area segregation and IEC 60079 requirements, and process-manufacturing where short‑time withstand and make‑current ratings drive busbar design. Patrion engineers integrate product families (SIVACON, MNS, Prisma Set) with IEC 61439 verification to deliver tested or calculated MDB assemblies tailored to load schedules, fault-levels, and site environmental constraints.
