Motor Control Center (MCC)

Centralized motor control with starters, contactors, overloads, and VFDs in standardized withdrawable/fixed functional units.

Motor Control Center (MCC)

A Motor Control Center (MCC) is an IEC 61439 assembly engineered to centralize control, protection and automation of multiple motors and motor-driven loads in industrial installations. Typical MCC architectures follow IEC 61439-1 (general rules) and IEC 61439-2 (power switchgear and controlgear assemblies) verification requirements and incorporate withdrawable or fixed modular functional units (draw-out starters, fixed starters, VFD bays). Market-reference product families include Siemens SIVACON and SIRIUS, ABB MNS line elements, Schneider Electric PrismaSet and Altivar drives, Eaton PowerXL, and LS Electric motor controllers, mounted in enclosures and sub-frames from Rittal or similar fabricators. Design parameters commonly specified are main busbar rated currents from 100 A up to 4 000 A, short-circuit withstand and making capacities (Icw/Ipk) typically from 25 kA to 100 kA or higher depending on site fault levels, and individual motor feeders from 0.37 kW to 250 kW. Busbar materials are copper or aluminium with insulated or insulated-and-sheathed arrangements; busbar trunking integration is addressed under IEC 61439-6 when continuous bus duct is used. Internal separation (forms of separation) is selected per IEC 61439-1: Form 1 through Form 4b are used, with Form 4b providing the highest segregation for withdrawable units and improved personnel safety. Protection and coordination follow the IEC 60947 series for low-voltage switchgear: motor starters per IEC 60947-4-1, contactors, overload relays and motor circuit breakers (MCCBs) coordinated for Type 2 selective behaviour where required. VFD integration requires additional considerations for harmonic mitigation, dc-link fusing, and thermal derating of upstream protective devices; common VFDs include ABB ACS, Schneider Altivar and Siemens SINAMICS. Communication-ready intelligent motor controllers with PROFINET, EtherNet/IP or Modbus TCP provide diagnostics and PLC/SCADA integration. Environmental and hazardous-area requirements are addressed with enclosure IP ratings (IP31, IP54, IP55, IP65) and Ex protection per IEC 60079 for hazardous atmospheres—purged/pressurized or flameproof enclosures are used offshore and in petrochemical plants. Verification testing under IEC 61439 includes temperature-rise, dielectric properties, short-circuit, and clearances/creepage; arc-flash mitigation and arc-resistant construction are increasingly specified (coordinate with IEEE/IEC guidance and supplier capabilities). Real-world applications span heavy industrial manufacturing, mining and metals, oil & gas and offshore platforms, water/wastewater pumping stations, marine propulsion/auxiliaries, food & beverage process lines, and pharmaceutical production where centralized motor management and redundancy reduce downtime and speed maintenance cycles.
