IEC 61439 Panel Type
Metering & Monitoring Panel
Energy metering, power quality analysis, and multi-circuit monitoring with communication gateways.

Metering & Monitoring Panels are IEC 61439-series assemblies engineered to deliver revenue-grade energy measurement, power quality analysis, and centralized multi-circuit monitoring for commercial, industrial and utility applications. Designed and built to IEC 61439-1 (general rules) and 61439-2/3 selection guidance, these panels combine precision instrumentation (Siemens SENTRON PAC, ABB EQM, Schneider PowerLogic PM800/PM5000, Socomec Diris) with instrument transformers (CTs/VTs conforming to IEC 61869) and communications gateways (Phoenix Contact, Moxa) to export Modbus RTU/TCP, BACnet/IP, IEC 61850, SNMP or MQTT streams to EMS/BMS/SCADA. Typical designs provide revenue-grade accuracy (IEC 62053 Class 0.2S / 0.5S), harmonic analysis up to the 63rd order, and power quality event capture to IEC 61000-4-30 Class A. Key design considerations include rated current and short-circuit capability: metering panels are commonly built on busbar platforms such as Siemens SIVACON, MNS or Schneider Prisma Set with rated currents ranging from 63 A up to 4,000–6,300 A for larger switchgear, and SCCR (short-circuit current rating) options from 10 kA to 100 kA peak depending on busbar system and switchgear devices. Internal separation (Forms 1, 2, 3a/b, 4a/b per IEC 61439-1) is often implemented as Form 4b to segregate metering compartments, CT/VT secondary wiring, and power distribution for safe maintenance, accurate measurement and anti-tamper access. Component selection focuses on low burden CTs (solid-core or split-core where retrofit is required), classed VTs or electronic voltage inputs, DIN-rail mounted instrument test blocks/shorting switches, and dedicated CT secondary junctions with shorting facilities and tamper seals. Thermal management, IP rating (IP31 for indoor switchrooms up to IP54/IP65 for outdoor critical metering kiosks) and enclosure material (CR steel or 304/316 stainless for corrosive/food/pharma or marine environments) are specified to meet site conditions. For hazardous areas, designs comply with IEC 60079 standards using Ex-rated transmitters or purged enclosures. Commissioning and verification include type and routine testing per IEC 61439 (dielectric, temperature-rise, mechanical operation, short-circuit withstand), meter calibration certificates (traceable to national standards), and power quality validation per IEC 61000-4-30. Real-world applications span data centers (demand profiling and PUE monitoring), renewable-energy point-of-interconnection metering, manufacturing energy optimization, hospital critical power monitoring, water-treatment pump stations and oil & gas site billing meters. OEM panels often integrate vendor sub-systems (SIVACON/MNS bus sections, Schneider Prisma Set housings, Phoenix Contact gateways) for modularity, maintainability and rapid deployment.
