IEC 61439 Panels

Eaton Main Distribution Board (MDB)

Eaton components integrated into IEC 61439 main distribution board (mdb) assemblies. Eaton provides the xEnergy type-tested switchboard system, NZM/NZMN moulded-case breakers, DIL contactors, and PKZ motor protection devices for IEC 61439 assemblies.

Eaton Main Distribution Board (MDB)

The Eaton Main Distribution Board (MDB) is an IEC 61439-2 compliant, type-tested distribution solution built around Eaton’s xEnergy switchboard platform and Eaton component families (NZM/NZMN breakers, PKZ motor protectors, DIL contactors, and Power Xpert metering). Designed for primary LV distribution in industrial plants, data centres, commercial buildings and utility substations, the assembly supports system rated currents up to 6300 A and short-circuit withstand levels in the 50–100 kA / 1 s range. The xEnergy busbar system is type-tested with verified temperature-rise and short-circuit endurance per IEC 61439-1/-2 verification procedures, reducing site engineering and routine type-test repetition for OEMs and EPC contractors. Incoming options include ACBs or type-tested incoming compartments with integrated protection, metering and communication modules. Outgoing feeders typically use NZM/NZMN moulded-case circuit-breakers with electronic trip units and adjustable long-time, short-time, instantaneous and earth-fault settings to achieve selective coordination per IEC 60947-2. Eaton Power Xpert metering and Modbus/IEC 61850 gateway modules enable energy monitoring and SCADA integration. Motor loads are protected using PKZ motor-protection switches and DIL contactors (motor starters) complying with IEC 60947-4-1, allowing combination starters with thermal-magnetic trip and phase-failure protection. Form of separation and IP rating choices reflect common MDB requirements: configurations from Form 2b through Form 4b allow segregation of busbar, incoming, and outgoing compartments to meet maintenance access and safety rules stated in IEC 61439-1. Enclosure protections from IP31 to IP54 are standard; for outdoor or hazardous area applications additional enclosures and ATEX/IECEx measures (IEC 60079 series) are applied. The Eaton MDB also supports residual-current monitoring and comprehensive earth-fault discrimination using adjustable protection relays or modular RCDs, enabling compliance with national earthing practices and coordination studies. Compared with other type-tested systems such as Siemens SIVACON, ABB MNS or Schneider Prisma Set, Eaton’s xEnergy emphasises modular feeder flexibility and direct compatibility with Eaton NZM/NZMN breaker ranges — favourable where compact feeder layout and electronic-trip communication are priorities. Design verification tests performed during type-test documentation include temperature-rise, dielectric tests, short-circuit making and withstand (Icw), and mechanical operation in accordance with IEC 61439-1/-2. For projects requiring internal arc classification, additional testing per IEC 61641 can be supplied. Typical applications: main incomer of substation switchrooms, data centre mains, industrial plant main distribution, commercial building landlord distribution and temporary/high-mobility sites (construction or E-house). Patrion integrates Eaton MDBs into complete turnkey solutions, performing short-circuit studies, Selective Coordination (SCC) studies, and FATs before dispatch.
