Siemens Main Distribution Board (MDB)

The Siemens Main Distribution Board (MDB) is a factory-assembled IEC 61439-compliant power distribution solution built around Siemens low-voltage switchgear families and a type-tested busbar architecture. Typical assemblies combine the SIVACON S8 type-tested enclosure and busbar system with Siemens incoming ACBs (3WL series), 3VA/3WA moulded-case and frame-type circuit breakers for feeders, SIRIUS contactors and SIMOCODE motor management for motor feeders, and SENTRON/SIPROTEC protection and metering devices for energy and fault management. Designs are verified to IEC 61439-1 (general rules) and IEC 61439-2 for power switchgear; distribution-board applications reference IEC 61439-3 and busbar-trunking interfaces use IEC 61439-6 where applicable. Electrical ratings supported range up to In = 6,300 A in standard MDB configurations (SIVACON busbar options extend to 7,400 A in larger switchboards), with short-circuit withstand Icw options in the 50–100 kA/1 s range depending on ACB/feeder selections, busbar cross-sections, and internal segregation. Rated voltage is up to 690 V AC; IP ratings from IP31 to IP54 are provided via enclosure and door sealing variants. Forms of separation from Form 2b through Form 4b are implemented to segregate busbar, functional units, and cable compartments per IEC 61439 verification and to meet local operational and maintenance requirements. Thermal and dielectric performance is achieved using a type-tested busbar system with verified temperature-rise calculations and test evidence. Incoming protection is typically an ACB (Siemens 3WL) with integrated electronic trip units, selective earth-fault and residual current protection, and optional integrated metering (SENTRON PAC3200 / PAC4200) or SIPROTEC relays for enhanced fault detection and automation. Outgoing feeders use 3VA/3WA MCCBs with adjustable trip settings for coordination, and SIRIUS contactor modules for motor starters. SIMOCODE and SIPROTEC families provide motor protection and advanced protection functions where required. For hazardous-area applications, MDB enclosures and selected components can be specified for IEC 60079 compliance, with Ex-rated devices and segregation to meet zone requirements. Integration into plant SCADA, energy-management systems, or cloud analytics is supported via SENTRON devices, SIMATIC gateways, PROFINET/OPC UA or IEC 61850 interfaces for substation-class deployments. Typical real-world applications include utility secondary distribution, industrial main distribution for manufacturing plants, data center mains, petrochemical and LNG facilities (with IEC 60079 compliance options), hospitals and large commercial campuses.
