Main Distribution Board (MDB) for Pharmaceuticals

IEC 61439 main distribution board (mdb) assemblies engineered for pharmaceuticals applications. GMP-compliant IEC 61439 panel assemblies for pharmaceutical manufacturing, cleanrooms, and biotech facilities meeting validation requirements.

Main Distribution Board (MDB) assemblies for pharmaceutical facilities are engineered low-voltage switchgear solutions that combine IEC 61439-2 type-tested panel architecture with industry-specific hygienic, validation and continuity-of-supply requirements. Typical MDBs for pharmaceuticals are specified up to 6300 A In and short-circuit ratings in the 50–100 kA/1 s range, rated for 690 V AC and delivered in Forms of Separation from 2b through 4b to ensure electrical segregation between busbar, incoming, outgoing and control compartments. Proven platform technologies such as Siemens SIVACON, ABB MNS and Schneider Prisma Set are commonly used as reference architectures for busbar design, temperature-rise verification and mechanical segregation, while upstream protection is provided by incoming ACBs (Masterpact/Moeller/Siemens/Schneider families) with integrated metering and communications. Pharmaceutical MDBs must address cleanroom and GMP constraints: panels are normally located outside classified zones where possible, or manufactured with flush-mounted, smooth stainless-steel (AISI 304/316) enclosures, hygienic finishes and sealed cable penetrations to prevent particle shedding and permit routine cleaning. IP ratings from IP31 to IP54 are selected based on washdown and local HVAC; enclosure and ingress protection follows IEC 60529 guidance. For solvent-handling or classification areas, explosion-protected versions compliant with IEC 60079 (Ex) are specified and Ex-certified components are used for any equipment inside hazardous zones. Protection and selectivity are tailored to pharmaceutical process continuity and validation: incoming ACBs with adjustable trip units, automatic transfer switch (ATS) integration, generator paralleling cubicles, and outgoing adjustable MCCBs (Tmax/EasyPact/Molded-case breakers) are used for coordinated discrimination in accordance with IEC 60947. Earth-fault and residual-current protection, arc-flash mitigation, and voltage/THD monitoring are integrated with digital metering and SCADA/PCS connectivity (Modbus/IEC 61850) for process alarms and audit trails required by FDA/EMA inspections. Design and commissioning meet both electrical and regulatory documentation expectations. Type-tested elements of the assembly are demonstrated per IEC 61439-1/2/3/6 (mechanical, dielectric, temperature rise, short-circuit withstand), routine and verification tests are executed on each unit, and FAT/SAT plus IQ/OQ/PQ packages are provided to support validation. Material traceability, spare parts lists, torque tables, single-line diagrams, and test certificates are standard deliverables. Typical deployments include main plant power centres, central emergency power distribution for critical HVAC/SCADA and isolated distribution for laboratory suites and aseptic processing lines where redundancy and rapid service restoration are mandatory.
