Siemens Motor Control Center (MCC)

The Siemens Motor Control Center (MCC) is a factory-assembled IEC 61439-2 compliant motor control solution that integrates Siemens low-voltage product families (SIVACON S8, 3VA/3WL circuit breakers, SIRIUS contactors/soft starters, SINAMICS drives, and SENTRON/PAC measuring devices) into withdrawable or fixed functional units for centralised motor management. Designed for rated voltages up to 690 V AC and rated currents commonly specified up to 6,300 A (SIVACON S8 can be applied to 7,400 A main bus scenarios), Siemens MCCs are engineered and type-tested per IEC 61439-1/-2 for dielectric, temperature rise, short-circuit withstand and protection against ingress. Short-circuit ratings are delivered in the 50–100 kA/1 s range depending on busbar design and breaker selection (3VA MCCBs and 3WL ACBs are IEC 60947 series devices used for rated ICW verification). Functional unit options include direct-on-line (DOL), star-delta, SIRIUS soft starters (3RW44 family) and SINAMICS G120/G120X variable frequency drives with integrated motor protection and electronic fuses. Withdrawable and plug-in cubicles follow Form 3b to Form 4b separation principles per IEC 61439-1 (modular segregation between busbars, functional units and low-voltage compartments) to permit safe racking, rapid maintenance and reduced mean-time-to-repair. Communication and diagnostics are provided by SIMATIC or SENTRON PAC meters and protection relays (SIPROTEC or SIRIUS 3RU/3RB motor protection relays) supporting Modbus, Profinet, EtherNet/IP and IEC 61850 gateways for substation-level integration. Siemens MCC assemblies support optional intrinsic safety and explosion-protected configurations to meet IEC 60079 where motors are in hazardous areas; in such cases, certified components and segregation techniques are applied, and additional type or routine testing is performed. Thermal management, selective coordination and motor protection settings are verified against IEC 60947 and IEC 61439 thermal and short-time withstand requirements; arc flash mitigation (arc-resistant design or arc detection and rapid isolation) can be included to meet client safety specifications.
