IEC 61439 Panels

ABB Motor Control Center (MCC)

ABB components integrated into IEC 61439 motor control center (mcc) assemblies. ABB delivers globally dominant IEC 61439 solutions including the MNS type-tested MCC/PCC system, ArTu distribution boards, Tmax XT breakers, and AF contactor series.

ABB Motor Control Center (MCC)

The ABB Motor Control Center (MCC) offering is an IEC 61439-2 compliant motor control solution built around ABB’s proven low-voltage component families and type‑tested MNS architecture. Designed for heavy industry, water and wastewater, HVAC, mining and oil & gas EPC projects, the ABB MCC integrates Tmax XT molded-case breakers and power protection, AF-series contactors and motor starters, ACS580/ACS880 variable frequency drives and ABB motor protection relays into standardized withdrawable or fixed functional units. When assembled to IEC 61439-2 the MNS MCC provides verified thermal and dielectric performance, and can be supplied up to 6300 A bus ratings with short-circuit withstand (Icw) in the 50–100 kA / 1 s range depending on configuration and busbar cross-section. Architecturally, ABB MCCs use standardized functional unit widths and racking systems to support withdrawable, plug-in or fixed units for DOL, star-delta, soft‑starter and VFD starter schemes. This form factor supports maintenance strategies (rapid isolation and replacement) and meets Forms of Separation from Form 3b up to Form 4b for internal arc mitigation and safe working clearances. Enclosure IP ratings are selectable from IP31 up to IP54 for indoor and semi-protected outdoor installations. Component compliance adheres to IEC 60947 series (switchgear, contactors, MCCBs) and hazardous-area options are available per IEC 60079 where Ex-certified starters and drives are required. Integration with plant automation and condition‑based maintenance is achieved using ABB drives and relays with fieldbus and industrial Ethernet connectivity—ACS drives support Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP and PROFINET, and select protection relays and relays with IEC 61850 capability are available for substations and advanced distributed control. Compared to alternative low-voltage platforms such as SIVACON or Prisma Set, the MNS type-tested MCC reduces site verification scope under IEC 61439 by providing factory-verified assemblies and standardized short-circuit level documentation, accelerating project schedules and reducing engineering overhead. Practical deliverables include coordinated selective protection using Tmax XT breakers, motor-selective protection with ABB electronic motor protection relays, configurable soft-starter modules, and harmonized wiring and earthing schemes to manage fault currents up to 100 kA. For hazardous or marine applications, specific enclosure materials, gasket systems and Ex-rated components are applied to comply with IEC 60079 and classification society rules. Patrion’s panel engineering leverages ABB modules to deliver turnkey MCCs that are type‑verified, factory-tested, and documented to meet IEC 61439-1/-2 requirements, enabling straightforward site acceptance and seamless integration into EPC and O&M workflows.
