Siemens Busbar Trunking System (BTS)
Siemens components integrated into IEC 61439 busbar trunking system (bts) assemblies. Siemens offers a complete IEC 61439 type-tested panel ecosystem including the SIVACON S8 switchboard system, 3VA/3WA circuit breakers, SIRIUS contactors, and SENTRON measuring devices.
The Siemens Busbar Trunking System (BTS) is a factory-prefabricated IEC 61439-6 compliant bus distribution solution that integrates Siemens low-voltage switchgear components—SIVACON S8 type-tested switchboards, 3VA/3WA circuit breakers, SIRIUS motor control contactors, and SENTRON metering/protection devices—into continuous sandwich or edge-mount busducts. Designed for 100–6300 A nominal currents and up to 690 V AC service, the BTS platform offers modular elbow, tee and cross elements, plug-in tap-off units and segmented fire-rated sections (E30–E120) for rapid field routing and compartment crossings while maintaining proven design verification and type-test heritage per IEC 61439-1 and IEC 61439-6. Mechanically, Siemens BTS employs spring-loaded silver-plated contacts to minimize contact resistance and thermal rise at high duty cycles. Electrical performance and short-circuit withstand are validated through type or unit testing (IEC 61439-1 and IEC 60947 series); typical short-time and peak fault withstands range by design from 25 kA to 100 kA Icw and Ipk depending on cross-section, connector technology and system configuration—final ratings are established by factory testing and verification. Internal segregation can be configured to meet Forms of Separation from Form 1 through Form 4b (per IEC 61439-1), enabling segregated busbars, control circuits and earthing compartments for improved safety and maintainability. The BTS supports a wide array of tap-off devices: plug-in MCCB tap-offs based on 3VA/3WA families, segmented SENTRON protection and energy meters for local monitoring, and SIRIUS contactor modules for motor feeders. For projects requiring Ex/ATEX compliance, the BTS can integrate explosion-rated components and follows IEC 60079 series requirements for hazardous-area installations when specified. IP ratings from IP52 to IP68 are achievable through gasketed enclosures and sealed tap-off modules for indoor and selected outdoor/wet environments. Siemens BTS is suited to critical power distribution in data centers, hospitals, airports, heavy industry, and offshore/petrochemical platforms where rapid installation, high short-circuit capability and selective coordination are required. System integrators and EPCs frequently select Siemens BTS when they require a type-tested ecosystem (SIVACON S8) combined with the flexibility of busduct distribution. For comparative selection, consider ABB MNS and Schneider Prisma Set as alternative type-tested switchgear families; however, BTS provides particular advantages where continuous bus routing, high tap-off density and compact corridor routing are priorities. For project-specific ratings, coordination studies, and type-test certificates, consult Siemens product documentation and request factory verification from the panel manufacturer or engineering partner.
