Rittal Busbar Trunking System (BTS)

Rittal components integrated into IEC 61439 busbar trunking system (bts) assemblies. Rittal is the industry-leading enclosure manufacturer offering the Ri4Power type-tested system within VX25 and TS 8 enclosures, plus integrated climate control solutions.

The Rittal Busbar Trunking System (BTS) integrates Rittal’s Ri4Power busbar technology and enclosure platforms (VX25, TS 8) into prefabricated, IEC 61439-6 busbar trunking assemblies for industrial power distribution. Designed for 100–6300 A continuous currents and 690 V AC systems, Ri4Power BTS assemblies use sandwich and edge-mount conductor geometries to optimise current density and thermal performance. Type-tested Ri4Power modules provide verified design performance under IEC 61439-2 and -6 for rated currents up to the system limits and reduce the scope of assembly-level verification when used as documented components. Typical short-circuit performance depends on conductor cross-section and coordination but is commonly supplied with short-time withstand (Icw) ratings up to 50 kA/1 s and peak prospective currents (Ipk) up to ~105 kA per type-test documentation and IEC 60947 coordination practices. Key mechanical features include modular elbows, tees, crosses and length sections for flexible routing, IP-rated couplings (IP52 through IP68) for indoor and harsh-environment runs, and fire-rated segments (E30–E120) for compartment boundary crossings in accordance with building/fire codes. Tap-off units are available as plug-in modules (capacities typically ranging from small lighting feeds to several hundred amps) to enable tool-less local distribution and downstream protective device integration. Electrical contact technology uses spring-loaded, silver-plated contacts for low contact resistance, reduced thermal rise and long cycle life—critical for frequent tap-in/tap-out operations in data centres, shipboard switchrooms, EV charging depots, and petrochemical plants. Integration with Rittal’s climate control (TopTherm, Blue e+) and cable management, as well as compatibility with other modular switchgear platforms (for example, comparative families such as Siemens SIVACON, ABB MNS, or Schneider Prisma Set) allows BTS solutions to be deployed in EPC projects where prefabrication, site speed and factory QA are priorities. Form of separation options (Form 2, Form 3b, Form 4a, etc.) are accommodated within modular Ri4Power enclosures and should be specified per IEC 61439-1 requirements and the application’s service continuity/maintenance needs. For hazardous-area installations, Ex-rated enclosures and components should be specified to IEC 60079-series standards. Patrion’s engineering services can provide short-circuit studies, temperature-rise verification, IP/fire segregation design and factory type-test documentation to accelerate site acceptance and commissioning.
