Eaton Busbar Trunking System (BTS)

Eaton components integrated into IEC 61439 busbar trunking system (bts) assemblies. Eaton provides the xEnergy type-tested switchboard system, NZM/NZMN moulded-case breakers, DIL contactors, and PKZ motor protection devices for IEC 61439 assemblies.

The Eaton Busbar Trunking System (BTS) is a factory-configured IEC 61439-6 solution that pairs Eaton’s xEnergy type-tested switchboard topology and modular protection devices (NZM/NZMN, PKZ, DIL contactors) with prefabricated trunking elements (elbows, tees, crosses) to deliver distributed low-voltage power up to 6300 A. Designed for panel builders and EPCs, Eaton BTS configurations are offered in sandwich and edge-mount busbar geometries, IP envelopes from IP52 to IP68, and fire-rated compartmentation options (E30–E120) to satisfy cable penetration and floor/ceiling boundary requirements in accordance with IEC 61439-1/6. Busbar contacts are spring-loaded and silver-plated to minimize contact resistance and wear; tap-off units are plug-in, free-standing or draw-out to support hot-swap and selective maintenance strategies. Electrical ratings and short-circuit performance are tailored per project: nominal currents from 100–6300 A, system voltages up to 690 V AC, and short-circuit withstand levels specified during type and routine testing (typical breaker and trunking layouts achieve breaking and prospective fault current ratings up to 100 kA–120 kA depending on NZM/NZMN protective devices and busbar impedance). Protection coordination follows IEC 60947 series guidance for circuit-breakers and contactors; Eaton electronic trip units and communication modules enable integration with BMS/SCADA via Modbus/Profinet. Mechanical and separation regimes are implemented to meet Forms of Separation per IEC 61439-1 (Form 1 through Form 4b as required). Eaton BTS can be integrated into larger switchboard families (xEnergy) or specified alongside other type-tested systems such as SIVACON, MNS or Prisma Set in complex installations; mechanical and electrical interface adapters are available for plug-in compatibility and factory acceptance testing (FAT). For hazardous-area projects, Eaton offers Ex-rated components and sealing practices to comply with IEC 60079/ATEX where tap-off boundaries traverse zoned spaces. Typical applications include data centres (high-density segmented distribution), hospitals (selective redundancy and fire-rated segregation), industrial plants (motor feeder distribution with PKZ and DIL control), offshore platforms (marine-grade IP68 trunking and Ex-capable tap-offs) and commercial campuses (modular load growth with plug-in tap-offs). Design deliverables include single-line diagrams with short-circuit studies, selective coordination files, FAT reports, and installation and maintenance manuals aligned to IEC 61439 verification routines. Patrion’s panel engineering team can supply Eaton BTS assemblies factory-tested to IEC 61439-6, coordinated with project-level switchgear like SIVACON, MNS or Prisma Set, and supplied with site commissioning support and spare parts documentation.
