Siemens components integrated into IEC 61439 variable frequency drive (vfd) panel assemblies. Siemens offers a complete IEC 61439 type-tested panel ecosystem including the SIVACON S8 switchboard system, 3VA/3WA circuit breakers, SIRIUS contactors, and SENTRON measuring devices.

The Siemens Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Panel is an IEC 61439-2 compliant, type-tested approach to enclosed motor control and drive distribution using Siemens drive and switchgear families. Typical panel architectures combine SINAMICS drives (G120, G120X, S120 and Perfect Harmony platforms for high-performance and regenerative applications) with Siemens distribution hardware from the SIVACON S8 ecosystem and protection devices such as 3VA/3WA circuit breakers, SIRIUS contactors and SENTRON measuring and protection devices. Panels support motor ratings from 0.75–1000 kW and input voltages 380–690 V AC; output frequency is configurable to 0–300 Hz. SIVACON S8 provides type-tested assemblies up to 7400 A main bus and is commonly delivered with short-circuit withstand (Icw) and prospective short-circuit current (Ipk) ratings in the 50–100 kA range depending on busbar configuration and design verification per IEC 61439-2. Drive-specific features include multi-pulse rectifier modules (6/12/18/24 pulse) or Active Front End (AFE) architectures for reduced total harmonic distortion (THD) and regenerative capability. EMC mitigation is supplied via integrated EMC filters rated C1/C2 (and C3 where required) and dU/dt or sine-wave filters (output chokes) to limit dv/dt stress on long motor cables. Safety integration uses SINAMICS and SIRIUS safety functions — in particular Safe Torque Off (STO) implemented to IEC 61800-5-2 — plus optional safety contactors and SIL-capable modules for machine safety systems. Control, metering and communications are handled with SENTRON power meters, SIPROTEC protection relays and integrated PLC/HMI or PROFINET/Modbus interfaces for remote diagnostics. IEC compliance and segregation: assemblies are engineered to IEC 61439-1/-2 principles with clear declaration of rated currents, short-circuit ratings, temperature-rise verification and creepage/clearance. Recommended forms of separation for VFD panels are Form 4b or Form 2b arrangements to segregate line-side, drive electronics and motor feeders — enabling safe maintenance and minimizing interaction between units. Protection and switching follow IEC 60947 series (MCCBs, contactors, motor starters) and, where applicable, IEC 60079 for installations in hazardous areas. Practical applications include central pump and fan stations, HVAC motor control centers, compressors, conveyors, water/wastewater treatment, and process plants requiring harmonic mitigation, regenerative capability and high-availability bypass options. Integration with other OEM floor-mounted cells (for hybrid solutions) is possible — Siemens components are frequently used alongside alternative platforms such as ABB MNS or Schneider Prisma SeT in multi-vendor projects — while maintaining the IEC 61439 verification boundary and documentation required for type-tested or partially type-tested assemblies.
