IEC 61439 Panels

ABB Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Panel

ABB components integrated into IEC 61439 variable frequency drive (vfd) panel assemblies. ABB delivers globally dominant IEC 61439 solutions including the MNS type-tested MCC/PCC system, ArTu distribution boards, Tmax XT breakers, and AF contactor series.

The ABB Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Panel integrates ABB drive platforms (ACS580, ACS880 and ACS800 series) with ABB low-voltage switchgear portfolios to deliver IEC 61439-compliant VFD assemblies suitable for industrial, HVAC, water/wastewater, marine and oil & gas applications. Typical assemblies are built on ABB MNS type-tested MCC/PCC modules (IEC 61439-2) or in ArTu/ArTu-L distributionboard layouts for smaller installations, and can be adapted to SIVACON- or Prisma Set-style busbar concepts where cross-brand integration is required. Panels incorporate multi-pulse (6/12/18-pulse) front ends or Active Front End (AFE) rectifiers for low harmonics (THDi <5% achievable), integrated EMC filters rated C1/C2/C3 for conducted emission control, and dU/dt or sinusoidal output filters to protect motor cable insulation. Protection and switching components rely on ABB Tmax XT molded-case circuit breakers, AF contactors, and withdrawable or fixed functional units from MNS offering internal separation up to Form 4b where required by project spec. Drives are delivered with integrated Safe Torque Off (STO) per IEC 61800-5-2 and can be combined with IEC 60947-4-1 compliant contactors and bypass hardware for manual or static bypass schemes. Typical electrical envelope: motor ratings 0.75–1000 kW, input 380–690 V AC, output 0–300 Hz, EMC filter classes C1–C3, IP ratings IP31–IP54. Busbar and short-circuit capabilities are provided per IEC 61439-1/2 verification or type tests; MNS-based assemblies commonly support bus currents from several hundred amps up to 4,000–6,300 A with type-tested short-circuit withstand ratings selectable up to the project requirement range (consult factory for Icw/Ipk selection). For hazardous area or gas group projects, drives and panels can be configured to meet IEC 60079 / ATEX / IECEx requirements with appropriate segregation, purging or ex d enclosures. Factory acceptance testing includes full IEC 61439 verification or design validation, routine dielectric and continuity tests, functional drive commissioning, harmonic and EMC verification, and FAT reports. Patrion’s engineering services can provide single-line layouts, coordination studies (short-circuit, selectivity, protection), harmonic studies in accordance with IEC 61000 series, and site commissioning to ensure ABB VFD panels meet specified performance and regulatory requirements.
