Siemens Power Factor Correction Panel (APFC)
Siemens components integrated into IEC 61439 power factor correction panel (apfc) assemblies. Siemens offers a complete IEC 61439 type-tested panel ecosystem including the SIVACON S8 switchboard system, 3VA/3WA circuit breakers, SIRIUS contactors, and SENTRON measuring devices.
The Siemens Power Factor Correction Panel (APFC) integrates Siemens low-voltage switchgear and control products into an IEC 61439-compliant APFC assembly engineered for industrial and commercial reactive power compensation. Typical assemblies use Siemens SIVACON S8 type-tested switchboard modules as the enclosure and bus system, combined with 3VA/3WA molded-case/air-break circuit breakers for protection, SIRIUS contactors (e.g., 3RT2 series) for capacitor switching, and SENTRON/PAC metering (PAC3200/PAC4200 or SENTRON PAC meters) for measurement and PF controller inputs. Panels are available in rated currents up to 800 A for APFC distribution sections while SIVACON S8 as a platform can be extended to main distribution duties up to several kA when required. Design follows IEC 61439-1 and -2 verification routes (type and unit testing where applicable), with documented temperature-rise, short-circuit (impedance), dielectric and mechanical tests. Forms of separation are selectable (Form 1 through Form 4b) to meet maintenance and segregation requirements; most industrial APFCs are supplied in Form 3b or 4b to permit safe isolation of capacitor banks and control circuits per IEC 61439-1. Short-circuit withstand and making capacities depend on breaker frame and coordination: typical APFC panels are designed for prospective short-circuit ratings from 25 kA to 65 kA RMS, expandable with suitable 3VA frames, back-up fuses and busbar bracing; final Icw/Ipk values must be declared in the verification files. Capacitor switching features automatic stepped switching controlled by a dedicated power factor controller; typical configurations offer 6–14 discrete steps to achieve a target power factor of 0.95–0.99. Heavy‑duty capacitor contactors (SIRIUS types) are fitted with pre‑charging resistors or soft‑make circuitry to limit inrush and restrike stress on capacitors. For harmonic-rich installations the panel integrates detuned reactors (5.67%–14% detuning) sized to avoid resonance amplification of 5th/7th harmonics; harmonic mitigation design follows IEC/EN 61000 series and best practices (coordination with IEEE 519 where applicable). Capacitor protection uses fuse solutions compliant with IEC 60831 and coordinated with contactors and upstream protection to ensure selective clearing of capacitor faults. Control and monitoring are provided by SENTRON measuring relays or PAC meters with RS485/Modbus or Profinet gateway options for BMS/Energy Management integration. IP ratings are typically IP31–IP42 for indoor industrial installations, with IP54/IP55 options and Ex-provisioning per IEC 60079 for hazardous areas on request. The Siemens APFC panel offers a type-tested, modular platform ideal for manufacturing plants, commercial buildings, data centers and utilities where precise reactive power control, harmonic robustness and IEC 61439 verification are required.
