IEC 61439 Panels

Schneider Electric Power Factor Correction Panel (APFC)

Schneider Electric components integrated into IEC 61439 power factor correction panel (apfc) assemblies. Schneider Electric provides the Prisma Set type-tested switchboard system, Masterpact MTZ and Compact NSX breakers, TeSys contactors, and Linergy busbar systems for IEC 61439 panels.

The Schneider Electric Power Factor Correction Panel (APFC) integrates Schneider’s proven low-voltage portfolio into IEC 61439-compliant assemblies for reliable reactive power compensation across industrial, commercial, and utility applications. Typical APFC assemblies are built on Schneider’s Prisma Set type-tested switchboard platform (type-tested up to 4000 A) and use Linergy busbar systems for robust distribution. Incoming and protection choices include Masterpact MTZ air circuit-breakers for high short‑circuit withstand and select Compact NSX MCCBs for branch protection; TeSys contactors are used as heavy‑duty capacitor switching devices with pre‑charging resistor schemes to limit inrush. Capacitor units and fuses are selected to meet IEC 60831 requirements; detuned reactors (commonly 5.67% to 14% – 7th harmonic tuning) are offered for harmonic‑rich environments to avoid resonance and meet network impedance limits. Design and verification follow IEC 61439-1 (general requirements) and IEC 61439-2 (power switchgear assemblies) with considerations from IEC 60947 series for switching devices and IEC 60079 where Ex-rated installations are required. Prisma Set assemblies support Forms of separation from Form 1 through Form 4b and enclosure protection from IP31 up to IP55 depending on door, gaskets and internal arrangement. Typical factory-verified ratings for APFC panels using Schneider components span rated currents up to 800 A per APFC module (with multi-bus Prisma Set assemblies capable of 4000 A total), and short-circuit withstand capability scalable from 25 kA to 150 kA depending on breaker selection (Compact NSX, Masterpact MTZ) and busbar verification by type tests or routine tests per IEC 61439-1. Functionality includes automatic step switching via a digital power factor controller (integrated or remote), unbalance protection, overvoltage blocking, and thermal monitoring of capacitor banks. For installations with significant harmonics (data centers, variable speed drive farms, steel mills), detuned reactors or tuned harmonic filters are recommended and specified to IEC 61000 series guidance; Schneider’s solutions can be combined with third‑party tuned filters when required. For explosion-risk zones, combination panels use explosion-protected components and comply with IEC 60079 series. Schneider Electric APFC panels are deployed in large commercial buildings, industrial plants, water utilities, renewable energy substations and microgrids where maintaining a target power factor of 0.95–0.99 avoids utility penalties and increases network capacity. Engineering deliverables include IEC 61439 verification reports (temperature-rise, dielectric, short-circuit proof, and protection against electric shock), single-line diagrams, coordination studies, and factory FAT for commissioning. For tailored designs—Prisma Set, Linergy, Masterpact MTZ, Compact NSX, TeSys—Patrion engineering can produce type-tested or verified APFC assemblies to meet site, utility and regulatory requirements.
