Eaton Power Factor Correction Panel (APFC)
Eaton components integrated into IEC 61439 power factor correction panel (apfc) assemblies. Eaton provides the xEnergy type-tested switchboard system, NZM/NZMN moulded-case breakers, DIL contactors, and PKZ motor protection devices for IEC 61439 assemblies.
The Eaton Power Factor Correction Panel (APFC) is an IEC 61439-compliant reactive power compensation assembly built around Eaton low-voltage switchgear and power-quality components. Designed for industrial plants, commercial buildings, HVAC and data centre loads, the panel pairs automatic capacitor step switching with detuned reactors and robust protection to deliver target power factors of 0.95–0.99. Core Eaton components used include NZM/NZMN moulded-case circuit breakers for circuit protection and short‑circuit breaking, Eaton contactor families for capacitor switching (heavy-duty capacitor contactors with pre-charge resistors), Eaton-compatible detuned reactors (5.67%–14% detuning) and Eaton energy meters (Power Xpert range) or communication modules for remote monitoring. The APFC can also be assembled using Eaton-type-tested switchboard systems (xEnergy) and is functionally comparable to other global switchboard platforms such as Siemens SIVACON, ABB MNS or Schneider Prisma Set when type-tested verification is required. Constructed and verified to IEC 61439-1 and IEC 61439-2 requirements, the Eaton APFC panel supports rated currents up to 800 A in typical shop-built configurations, with capacitor banks sized in 6–14 steps to optimise step granularity and minimise hunting. Short-circuit withstand capability is provided via NZM/NZMN breakers and verified busbar mechanical and thermal calculations; practical assembled Icw/Icu capability typically ranges from 50 kA to 100 kA depending on busbar cross-sections, breaker selection and verification method per clause 8–10 of IEC 61439-1. Forms of separation commonly implemented for APFC panels are Form 2b and Form 4b (electrical separation between functional units and front access), enabling safer maintenance and segregation of live compartments. Protection and coordination follow IEC and product standards: capacitor elements are selected to IEC 60831 specifications, fuses and fuse-links per IEC 60269 where applicable, switching contactors and overload devices meet IEC 60947 series requirements, and hazardous-area adaptations reference IEC 60079 for Ex installations. Harmonic-rich installations use detuned reactors (5.67% commonly for 5th/7th harmonic mitigation) and sometimes broadband filtering; reactor ratings, thermal derating and inrush considerations are verified per IEC 60076/IEC 61439 guidance. Operational features include pre‑charging resistors to limit inrush on capacitor step switching, heavy‑duty capacitor contactors to withstand frequent operations, overcurrent and unbalance detection, step sequencing logic, and options for Modbus/Profibus/IEC 61850 communications. Typical applications include process plants with large motor loads, utility substations, hospitals and modern commercial buildings where power-factor penalties or voltage instability must be mitigated. Patrion’s engineering teams can supply type-verified Eaton APFC assemblies, factory FAT documentation, and site support for IEC 61439 verification and short-circuit testing preparation.
