IEC 61439 Panels

ABB Power Factor Correction Panel (APFC)

ABB components integrated into IEC 61439 power factor correction panel (apfc) assemblies. ABB delivers globally dominant IEC 61439 solutions including the MNS type-tested MCC/PCC system, ArTu distribution boards, Tmax XT breakers, and AF contactor series.

The ABB Power Factor Correction Panel (APFC) is an IEC 61439-compliant low-voltage assembly built around ABB power distribution and switching families to deliver reliable reactive power management for industrial, commercial and utility sites. Typical implementations combine ABB MNS type-tested MCC modules or ArTu/Prisma Set distribution frames with Tmax XT MCCBs for stage protection, AF contactors for capacitor switching and detuned reactors sized for 5.67% to 14% detuning. Panels are engineered to IEC 61439-1/-2 design verification and can be delivered to internal separation Form 2/3b/4b as required. Capacitors conform to IEC 60831 and are protected with dedicated cartridge or NH fuse-links per IEC 60269; surge and pre-charge resistors are provided to limit inrush and reduce switching transients. Electrical ratings and protective coordination are engineered for the application: rated currents up to 800 A per busbar, step counts typically 6–14, and short-circuit withstand ratings scalable from 10 kA to 100 kA depending on frame (MNS vs. free-standing cubicle) and verification tests. For harmonic-rich environments the panel integrates detuned reactors (5.67% C-type for wideband detuning, 14% D-type for high detuning) or harmonic filters; sizing follows IEEE/IEC guidance to prevent resonance with common VFD harmonics. Tmax XT breakers provide high breaking capacity and accessories for remote trip/communication; AF contactors are heavy-duty AC switching devices rated per IEC 60947-4-1 for repetitive capacitor duty and include pre-charging resistors to eliminate capacitive inrush. Control, metering and communications are package options: local ABB power factor controllers or third‑party relays plus energy meters with Modbus TCP/RTU, Profibus or IEC 61850 gateway enable SCADA/BMS integration. IP ratings from IP31 to IP42 are standard; higher IP or Ex-rated enclosures to IEC 60079 are available for hazardous-area installations. Typical applications include steel plants, petrochemical switching yards, data centers, hospitals and airport terminals where tight PF targets (0.95–0.99) reduce utility penalties and improve voltage stability. The APFC design emphasizes coordinated protection, serviceability (withdrawable MNS units where required), and full IEC traceability of components (Tmax XT, AF contactors, ABB relays), making these panels suitable for EPC contractors, panel builders and facility owners requiring type-tested, maintainable reactive power solutions.
