IEC 61439 Panels

ABB PLC & Automation Control Panel

ABB components integrated into IEC 61439 plc & automation control panel assemblies. ABB delivers globally dominant IEC 61439 solutions including the MNS type-tested MCC/PCC system, ArTu distribution boards, Tmax XT breakers, and AF contactor series.

The ABB PLC & Automation Control Panel is a purpose-built IEC 61439-2 power switchgear and controlgear assembly that combines ABB’s control, protection and distribution portfolio with application-level PLC/PAC, HMI and communications infrastructure. Typical ABB product families applied in these panels include the AC500 PLC series (modular and redundant PAC options), CP600/CP400 HMI operator panels, Tmax XT molded-case circuit breakers, AF contactor series, ACS/ACH drives for motor control, and the type-tested MNS motor control centre (MCC) platform. For distribution and smaller board applications the ArTu distribution board family and modular Prisma Set-compatible architectures are commonly referenced in multi-vendor projects alongside SIVACON/Prisma Set comparisons during specification. Design verification follows IEC 61439-1 and -2 with consideration for forms of separation (Form 1 through Form 4b). Assemblies can be delivered up to Form 4b internal separation using withdrawable MNS units or segregated functional compartments for PLC, aux power, and LV distribution. Busbar designs in ABB-based cabinets support rated currents from typical PLC-panel feeders (100–1,600 A) up to MCC-level bus systems (1,600–6,300 A) depending on the MNS or ArTu configuration; short-circuit withstand and breaking capacity (Icw / Ipk) are validated per the assembly’s type tests and component ratings (Tmax XT frames up to high kA breaking capacities per IEC 60947-2). Control architecture options include single and redundant AC500 PLCs with hot-standby, distributed and remote I/O expansion (PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP), and managed Industrial Ethernet switches providing VLAN segregation and QoS for deterministic control traffic. Power supplies are typically 24 VDC redundant (N+1 or dual feed), with segregation of critical control circuits and battery-backed UPS integration for safe shutdown. For hazardous area deployments ABB components can be selected and certified to IEC 60079 standards, and panels can be supplied with Ex-rated enclosures and segregation as required. Applications span petrochemical and oil & gas skids, mining and minerals processing, wastewater treatment, HVAC & building automation, packaging and machine tools, and utility substation automation. Manufacturing and EPC specifications requiring type-tested performance (MNS) or custom design verification (ArTu/Prisma Set-style distribution) can be fulfilled; final short-circuit and temperature-rise validation is performed to IEC 61439 test regimes, with component compliance to IEC 60947 and assembly documentation including SCD, wiring schematics, and test reports.
