ABB Generator Control Panel

ABB components integrated into IEC 61439 generator control panel assemblies. ABB delivers globally dominant IEC 61439 solutions including the MNS type-tested MCC/PCC system, ArTu distribution boards, Tmax XT breakers, and AF contactor series.

The ABB Generator Control Panel is an IEC 61439-2 compliant generator switchgear assembly built around ABB low-voltage product families to deliver reliable start/stop, synchronization, paralleling and protection for standby and prime power installations. Typical ABB building blocks used in these assemblies include the MNS type-tested MCC/PCC system (withdrawable and fixed functional units, busbar ratings typically up to 5,000–6,300 A), ArTu/Prisma distribution boards for feeder segregation, Tmax XT molded-case and air circuit-breakers (designed per IEC 60947-2 with frame sizes selectable to 1,600–3,200 A and breaking capacities up to typically 65–100 kA Icu at 400–415 V depending on model), and AF contactor series rated per IEC 60947-4-1 for generator breaker and excitation circuits. Generator protection and control is supplied by ABB Relion-class relays (for example REL670 family) and multifunction generator controllers providing reverse power, over/under voltage, over/under frequency, loss of mains (AMF), synch-check and synchronizing functions. Assemblies are engineered to meet IEC 61439-1/-2 verification requirements (temperature-rise, dielectric, short-circuit withstand, mechanical operation, clearances/creepage) and can be executed up to Form 4b internal separation for withdrawing generator control units and feeders. For intrinsically safe or classified area installations, Ex-certified components and wiring practices per IEC 60079 are applied; intrinsically safe sensors and certified protection relays can be integrated into the same assembly with suitable segregation. Typical generator kVA range supported is 50–3,000 kVA with switchgear configurations designed for continuous currents from tens of amps up to several kiloamps on main busbars, and short-circuit withstands verified per IEC 61439 short-circuit test or calculation (Ikss/Ip up to the chosen breaker rating). Functional features include automatic mains failure detection (AMF), closed-transition or breaker-to-breaker paralleling synchronization, droop and isochronous load sharing, programmable power management and start/stop sequencing, with PLC or embedded controller integration for site BMS/SCADA. Real-world applications include hospital standby systems, data centre generator paralleling, industrial prime-power plants, marine and offshore genset farms, mining generator sets and distributed generation microgrids. Using ABB’s modular MNS and ArTu platforms allows for factory type-tested units to be combined with project-specific generator control bays, reducing site testing and commissioning time while maintaining traceability and conformity to IEC 61439 documentation, marking and testing obligations.
