ABB Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) Panel

ABB components integrated into IEC 61439 automatic transfer switch (ats) panel assemblies. ABB delivers globally dominant IEC 61439 solutions including the MNS type-tested MCC/PCC system, ArTu distribution boards, Tmax XT breakers, and AF contactor series.

The ABB Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) Panel is an IEC 61439-compliant automatic changeover assembly that pairs ABB low-voltage switchgear and control technologies with panel-level design verification for critical power continuity. Typical ABB devices used in ATS panels include MNS type-tested MCC/PCC sections and SIVACON distribution bays for segregated bus architectures, Emax/Emax 2 or Tmax XT protective devices for upstream and load protection, AF contactors and motorized ATS modules for transfer operations, and Ekip/ABB Ability monitoring for digital metering and communications. These assemblies are engineered to meet IEC 61439-1 and -2 requirements for enclosure, temperature rise, dielectric properties and fault withstand, and can be adapted to IEC 61439-3 (distribution boards) and IEC 61439-6 (busbar trunking systems) where needed. Design choices for ABB ATS panels include selectable forms of internal separation (Form 1, 2, 3, 4a and type-tested Form 4b) to provide segregation between busbar, functional units and cable compartments — a common specification for data centers, hospitals and process plants is Form 4b with withdrawable or fixed transfer modules. Rated currents are typically engineered up to 4000 A per assembly, with short-circuit withstand and making capacities verified in the type-test programme; depending on configuration and components (e.g., Emax 2 or bolted busbars in MNS) assemblies can be specified for fault levels commonly between 25 kA and 100 kA RMS symmetrical at 415/400 V. Transfer mechanisms support static (solid-state or static transfer switch modules) and motorized mechanical transfer designs, selectable make-before-break or break-before-make sequences, neutral switching and adjustable transfer/retransfer delays (typ. 0.1–10 s). For generator paralleling and automatic load transfer, ABB ATS panels integrate source monitoring for phase-voltage, frequency and phase-sequence, plus load prioritization and shedding logic. Communications are enabled via Ekip and ABB Ability platforms and standard field protocols (Modbus/Modbus TCP and gateway arrangements to IEC 61850 where required). Hazardous-area installations can be executed using Ex-rated components and enclosure designs to IEC 60079 with appropriate segregation and purge or flameproof methods. OEM and EPC customers often pair ABB ATS modules with third-party distribution platforms (for example Prisma Set-type boards) for hybrid solutions. In real-world applications, ABB ATS panels are used in mission-critical power systems: data centers (automatic transfer to UPS/generator feeds), hospitals (transfer to backup supply under IEC requirements), petrochemical and offshore installations (where IEC 60079 compliance is mandatory), and industrial plants requiring high availability and maintainability. Patrion engineers provide IEC 61439 design verification, short-circuit and temperature-rise calculations, factory acceptance testing and field commissioning to ensure the assembled ABB ATS meets project specifications and local regulations.
